Being both a person who enjoys games, and is a fan of AEW, I got myself a copy of AEW Fight Forever back when it came out. My short review here: the game played extremely well when you were in the ring, but was very much lacking in terms of things like match types and customization. Overall, I enjoyed it, and wish that AEW would consider making another console game.

we'll always have that great abadon promo, at least...

An idea that I have had for a new AEW game, and one that a number of people have also had, is for it to not be a wrestling game. AEW is meant to be an alternative, the thing that we all watch because we're sick of WWE's bullshit, having a game attempting to recreate the same yearly WWE 2k entries goes against that. The roster for AEW lends itself well to other genres; imagine an RPG about The Conglomeration, for example. Other wrestling promotions have done this in the past. Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling in Japan had a 1-on-1 fighting game for the Super Famicom, where some of the FMW roster fought against a cyborg that did Taekwondo and a sentient mushroom with boxing gloves. It's not nearly as good as it sounds.

WWE themselves have done this, making a game with their, big sigh, Superstars doing things that aren't wrestling, or Sports Entertaining. The first one that comes to mind is WWF Betrayal on the Game Boy Color, which is a side-scrolling brawler where you fight referees, security guards, and guys with guns shaped like briefcases, all to rescue a kidnapped Stephanie McMahon. Then there is the infamous WWE Crush Hour, a car combat game in the vein of Twisted Metal. Both of these games are fucking dogshit. They both commit the cardinal sin that no licensed game with a unique spin on its property should commit: being boring. Betrayal and Crush Hour are so dull. There's nothing good or bad about either of them. Thoroughly mediocre experiences that don't go far enough with their ideas. The most you can get is a quick chuckle at Triple H doing a shoot Pedigree on a cop armed with a billy club and a stun gun in Betrayal, or wondering if the developers of Crush Hour knew how fucking funny it was to release a game where Jeff Hardy drives a car.

Now we get to Wrestlemania XIX on the Gamecube. On the surface, it looks no different than the number of WWE games on the PS2, back when those games were still good. While it was developed by Yukes, the same company who did all those PS2, as well as AEW Fight Forever (and Hermie Hopperhead!), the game's DNA is more in line with the AKI-developed Nintendo 64 wrestling games, so it is a mechanically different experience here. It plays just fine, nothing really all that wrong with it. Any actual complains would be that the roster is pretty small, and that of everyone in WWE that could've been included, Al Snow is playable. Al Fucking Snow is a playable character in a 2003 video game, during a time when WWE had Shelton Benjamin and goddamn Ultimo Dragon on the payroll. Some crimes can never be forgiven.

Go beyond the surface of Wrestlemania XIX, and you find something unique and interesting. Rather than the usual Season or Story mode, where you get to digitally experience all of Paul Heyman's worst booking ideas in order to unlock a new shirt for Shawn Michaels to wear, there's something new: Revenge mode.

Revenge mode begins with your chosen WWE Superstar (or created character) getting fired by Vince McMahon, and being given your severance pay of getting your fucking ass kicked by his private security. You are then found by Stephanie McMahon who offers you a deal at the titular Revenge: sabotage the upcoming Wrestlemania pay-per-view, and you'll get paid a bunch of money. Unfortunately, you don't sabotage Wrestlemania Tommy Dreamer style, but what you do is good enough. Things like wrecking the construction site where the show will be held (very relevant given the recent Saudi Royal Rumble), destroying merchandise, and destroying the trucks or boats carrying the ring and the staging equipment. As someone who thinks WCW never should have died, how could I not take an opportunity to hurt Vince McMahon?

Revenge mode is something of a pseudo-brawler. You run around in malls and harbors and construction sites, beating up construction workers and rent-a-cops, working your way up to bodyguards and secret agents, all the way up to Vince's personal security, who look like someone's Grappler Baki OC. Of course, other WWE Superstars™️ will be in the mix, which can be funny when you see The Big Show standing side by side with a wild-haired martial artist in a Hannya mask. These characters can all become playable, by the way.

Yukes took a look at how they coded the Royal Rumble match, and came up with a mechanic that carries this entire mode: what if, instead of throwing a wrestling over the top rope, you instead threw off tall buildings to their death.

Throw people into chasms. Throw people into the river. Throw people into oncoming traffic. Throw people through real glass (go cry me a river). In order to defeat Vince McMahon, you have to have to have killed almost as many people as he has. It's such a basic thing, but it's compelling and interesting enough, and it's such a refreshing change of pace from the previously mentioned bad story modes that these games have. Granted, some of these levels have a difficulty curve that can best be described as completely unfair bullshit that requires luck and not spiking your Gamecube down the same deep pit you've sent so many others to die in to complete. Anything that involves climbing, or is set to a difficulty level of 4 or higher will drive you mad. I know this because it drove me mad. There is also a level where Goldberg is completely invincible. Fuck Goldberg, man.

I must also point out that the ending is pretty anticlimactic. You fuck over Wrestlemania, costing WWE millions of dollars. Stephanie McMahon swoops in, suddenly books her own Wrestlemania, where the main event is you versus Vince. You face Vince in a regular old wrestling match, and not a particularly difficult one. Not something cool where you throw him through or off of something. No situation where you kill Vince McMahon, something everyone that isn't a syncophant has wanted to do for decades. For his many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many faults as a disgraceful human being, Vince McMahon is also willing to do ridiculous risks and fuck his own body for the sake of a storyline. He's not so fragile as to say no to being killed in a storyline, especially given that this literally happened a few years later.

donald trump called wwe headquarters to ask if vince was okay, because he thought this was a real death. just a little something to think about.

All that aside, this one mode is what I want out of wrestling games, and is why I ended up liking this one. Fuck giving me an accurate representation of what happens in the ring; Fire Pro exists for that. Both WWE and AEW have characters that lend themselves to outside ventures. More games that are only tangential to wrestling would be really cool, creative, and could really freshen up a stagnant scene. Come on Tony Khan, the producer of Scribblenauts is literally one of your referees, you're telling me you all can't think outside of the box?

I should probably open this up with an apology for all of my radio silence on here. Not just in the last couple of months, but for the last couple of years. I keep doing this thing where I post something, disappear for a lengthy period of time, then post something again, repeat. Sometimes I might do a post where I say, "I am going to post more," and then I don't. Might be a good time to explain why I'm being like this.

I admit that I finally gave in to despair and negativity. There's just so much of it floating around these days, moreso than any other time in my life. That's not even getting into global events that change from week to week, all terrible, all things that nobody with a heart actually likes or supports that I try not to talk about because I'm not interested in fear mongering and also the last time I tried to use what little influence I had to help the world, a lot of boot-licking libertarians who pretend to be Communist for Twitter likes and clicks on their Aftermath articles told the world for ten fucking years that I'm evil and should die in hell for having the double whammy of Pronouns In Bio and Autism, so now I just write about old pop culture because nobody can hurt me while I watch an episode of Inuyasha uploaded by somebody who included commercials for Sears Air Conditioning and Pokemon The First Movie after the mid-episode eyecatch, or load up a Playstation ROM and play it with a CRT filter turned on.

I sat back and did nothing while terrible people erased me and my friends from history, as if we never existed or ever mattered. Having one of the worst years of my life constantly relitigated forever by shameless grifters at Kotaku does not feel good! Let me just say this: I had to deal with Gamergate bullshit when I was 28. I will be turning 40 this year. Let me move on with my life. Some hack writer at the worst gaming website decided to get into a kayfabe battle with Mark Kern, a man who lost all relevance in 2016 before he got the HD remaster treatment two years ago, and rewrote the history of Gamergate to exclude every single trans person affected by it. All the death threats we had to deal with, the doxxing, having to literally talk people down from a ledge, it means nothing. May as well have never happened. That shit really fucked me up for a while. You go through a hardship, and you go through it with the hope that it sucks now, but it will be worth it when it's over. And it's not. Ten years of my life rendered meaningless, me and everybody else rendered irrelevant almost immediately. I'll admit that I have felt real fucking bitter about that. I already knew that games journalism was full of the worst boot-licking libertarian assholes that I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire, and now I just hate them even more! Good job, everyone! Maybe we aren't the ones that need to "have some dignity."

Felt like writing and posting on here didn't matter, because it seemed like trying to find a deep understanding of a great medium like games was overshadowed by shallow bullshit like HEY EVERYONE GUESS WHAT RACIST SHIT ASMONGOLD SAID TODAY ISN'T IT FUCKED UP!? or HITLER_GUY_420 WITH 15 FOLLOWERS CALLED FOR THE DEATH OF AN ENTIRE RACE FUCKING LOOK AT IT. Some asshole who pays for Twitter giving people a cheap dopamine hit to laugh at or be offended by someone with reprehensible views that probably wouldn't be nearly as popular if they weren't being platformed and broadcasted every five fucking minutes.

For all these years, my whole thing has been writing about the power of games as a medium. How they are not, no matter what Ian Bogost told you in a racist Bluesky thread, meaningless children's toys designed to occupy the time of the mentally impaired. How they have meaning. My confidence was already through the floor because of the whole erasure of my life, plus a much bigger thing that I will get to later, and now I just didn't feel like writing. Not that I'm doing all this because I'm treating it like a popularity contest, but it does suck that you put in time and work, and people seem to care more with obssessing over some racist asshole, turning them into some "lolcow." Then proceeding to completely ignore all of their racism because it turns out that, oh my god, they like foot porn, too! Not someone having a sexual kink! That's so much worse than wanting to enact a white ethnostate!

This constant broadcasting of hate. The proliferation of AI. The closures, takedowns, and censorship of what remains of a free internet. I don't use the internet as an escape, but I do use it because I need to take my mind off of certain things, and there aren't any spaces in my local area where I can hang out; no arcades or anime clubs that don't require me to go nearly an hour out of my way on some of the worst roads in the state, so I spend a lot of time on the 'net to try and take some stress out of my offline life.

So why do I need to take my mind off of things? Long time readers will remember that at the end of 2023, my mother had a stroke, which left her permanently disabled, and I've been acting as her caretaker ever since. Last Summer, her health got worse. First, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, something that has left her with severe physical pain that comes and goes. Having to literally carry her out of her bed because she was in so much agony that she couldn't move, her screams of pain and worried cries that she might be paralyzed ringing in my ears are a memory that will most likely stay with me for the rest of my life. That period of time where I couldn't hit a bump in the road while driving in case it caused her pain in her neck. Helping her use a walker so she go back and forth to the bathroom. A terrifying, stressful time, to say the least.

While she has been taking medication that has drastically improved that situation, doctors diagnosed her with something else while doing more check ups: cancer. I rang in my 39th birthday and ended 2025 with the knowledge that my mom has cancer. She got another biopsy a few weeks ago that came up negative, which is good, but she still has some stuff in her that needs to be taken out. It not being emergency is either a sign that maybe things aren't that bad, or she's so far gone that doctors are going to take their time with her. Who knows? I never had much family to begin with, and as time goes on, I have less and less, and eventually I won't have any. Wasn't really expecting it to possibly be so soon.

So now we're here in March of 2026, and I'm tired. Tired of all the damn bullshit, and tired of feeling too sad and depressed to do things. I exist, I matter, and the things I make have had an impact on other peoples' lives, even if that impact is a small one. I refuse to be erased, I refuse to have my struggles rendered meaningless, and I refuse to let this second home of mine go to waste any longer. Can't guarantee that I'll go back to the weekly update schedule that I had from 2019-2022, but I'll fucking try, dudes.

Anyways, I'm going to end this post with more feet, because fuck you, I pay for this site and I can post whatever I want on it:

You begin Dark Souls locked up in an asylum. You were born different, your very existence a threat to a dying empire, and you are punished becuase of this. Rescued by another person much like yourself, you are forcibly thrust out into an unforgiving world designed to kill you at every turn.

The goal of Dark Souls is simple: ring the Bell of Awakening at the top of the Undead Parish. Fighting your way through mindless undead, large monsters, death traps, and a fire-breathing dragon, you ring the bell, and the goal changes: ring a second Bell of Awakening in the depths of Blighttown. To even reach Blighttown, you will need to navigate multiple other dangerous areas, fight enemies more dangerous than the previous ones you've fought, all while trying not to get lost. Once in Blighttown, you are knee deep in a poison swamp that will kill you if you are unprepared, swarming with large bugs, club and boulder wielding ogres, and snipers armed with darts that only exacerbate the diseases you can catch. A half-woman, half-spider creature that sprays molten lava is the final obstacle between you and the Bell.

You finally, after many hours and many deaths, ring the two bells. The goals change once again. Now you must travel to the distant land of Anor Londo. To get to Anor Londo, you have to pass through Sen's Fortress, which has opened following the ringing of the two bells. Sen's Fortress is riddled with traps to stop a promising adventurer in their tracks.

Anor Londo itself is home to the elite knights of a fallen empire, protecting an empty throne. In the throne room itself, the elite of the elite: Dragonslayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough, the subsequent battle against them possibly being the toughest challenge you have faced thus far. Defeat them, and you will meet up with Princess Gwynevere. Gwynevere is not real; Anor Londo does not exist anymore. Everything you have been through in this new land, everything that Ornstein, Smough, the knights, and the giants have been protecting has been an illusion. Attacking Gwynevere reveals this, and plunges the grand and bright land into a permanent darkness. You may wonder what the point of this whole journey is at this point, but you have no alternative but to press on.

Whether she lives or dies, Gwynevere gives you an item called the Lordvessel. The Lordvessel is needed to collect the souls of the Great Lords. Your goal changes one more time: kill the four Lords that are keeping the world in a state of decay for their own desperate reasons, all to maintain the little power they have left.

You continue on. Travelling to Lost Izalith, a forgotten ruin that trades the poison swamps of Blighttown for large pools of lava. The Bed of Chaos rules this area, a matriarchal witch mutated beyond recognition due to her pursuit of stronger magic. Beneath the intimidating exterior is the real witch: reduced to a pitiful, enfeebled insect. Then to the Duke's Archive, a massive library turned makeshift prison. Filled to the brim with books so full of knowledge, that they have sent readers into madness, including the Duke himself, a dragon who betrayed his own race to side with the Lords. Then the Tomb of the Giants, a pitch black cave with predictably low visibility. As the name suggest, the tomb is home to skeletons. Human skeletons, giant skeletons, living towers of bones, and most distressing: the reanimated, undeveloped bones of human children. Then there's New Londo, a flooded city that hides a terrible secret once you drain the water: the flood was created on purpose, killing a untold number of people, whose corpses you walk over as if they were no different from the road. The people of New Londo were the closest thing the Lords had to an actual threat, and had to be taken out in drastic fashion.

You get the four souls, and place them in the Lordvessel. The actual, final challenge of Dark Souls awaits: entering the Kiln of the First Flame, defeating Lord Gwyn, and taking his place in order to maintain the Age of Fire. Or, you can kill him, and reject the fire, ushering in an uncertain new era: the Age of Dark.

You're finished. Dark Souls is over. All the fighting. The long journey through multiple lands. The people you've met along the way, and had to kill after they lost their sense of self and went mad. The many failures, and just as many successes you've had. What happens now?

You're back in your asylum cell.

The Age of Fire continues. The world is the same as it was before you set out on your journey. Everyone is back to life. Gwyn and his Lords are still ruling a dying land. The only difference is you. You've kept your equipment and abilities, as well as your knowledge of Dark Souls' world. But the world is still the same.

Dark Souls doesn't end.

The story and world of Dark Souls remains the same, but the in-game difficulty is raised in order to continue challenging your character. You can finish the game a second time, and you'll be back in a cell, difficulty slightly higher than last time. The cruelty of the world becoming more apparent, in spite of your own personal strength. You think you have everything figured out, and then you realize that you don't have a clue. Your growth as a person feels so irrelevant because the world will not fucking change. In spite of all you've done, the past will always come back to haunt you. Dark Souls is a difficult challenge, that turns into a power fantasy, that then becomes a nihilistic exercise. You tried to make a difference, and it didn't matter.

Your success and failure mean nothing. A meaningless being that will be forgotten longer than they will be remembered. Countless numbers of would-be adventurers came before you; the only reason you are considered the "Chosen Undead" is because you are the only one that hasn't failed, not because you're anything special. If you do fail? There will be another sucker that will come along after you.

Humans in Dark Souls have one fear above all else: going "Hollow." Becoming a Hollow is a fate worse than death. A Hollow is someone who has lost their humanity. A person who has lost their purpose, their reason for being, and it reflects in their physical appearance, and causes them to lose their mind to the grip of madness. Nothing more than a pitiable husk of what was once a person. This is a world where people are told over and over again that they don't matter, that nothing they do matters, and these points are repeated over and over until they give in to despair. When one refuses to give in, their accomplishments are instead made to be irrelevant. I spent so much time going over Dark Souls' in-game progression because, out of all the demons and death traps, they pale in comparison to the cruelest beast of all: insignificance.

Pain and suffering in an uncaring world. Rotted ghouls at the top that care about power above all. Seeing others accept this reality, willingly becoming mindless creatures only interested in harming others. Those who refuse this must then struggle with not just the world, but with your own worth and identity. Dark Souls feels more relevant in 2026 than it did during its release in 2011. A time where everything feels more worthless than ever.

Or maybe I'm just really fucking depressed. Who knows?

I've said before that I don't think that games age. Or at least, I don't think they "age badly." Nor do I think that you necessarily had to be there at the time to fully understand the cultural context to most games; doesn't matter if it's 1985 or 2025, you can still enjoy Super Mario Brothers without having to understand what game development was like in the 80s. It's like watching a great film after everyone else, or listening to an album that influenced so many of your favorite bands: you'll understand things pretty quickly by absorbing the art, and maybe a few minutes of research at the most. Then you get a game like Gundam Battle Assault 2, which is such a perfect encapsulation of a very specific moment in time, that I feel like most of its appeal lies in having actually been around in that era, and in that particular sub-culture.

GBA2 is a 1-on-1 fighting game based on Mobile Suit Gundam, released in 2002 for the Playstation. The world was all-in on the sixth generation of consoles; not even Capcom were releasing games for it anymore, and here's this little fighting game quietly coming out on a system that rode off into the sunset a year before. This game was made for one specific reason: to capitalize on the western success of Mobile Fighter G Gundam, which had begun airing on Cartoon Network. So now it makes sense as to why it would be a Playstation release and not something put together for the PS2, as it would be quicker to reuse existing code and assets, with most of the development time spent working on adding G Gundam characters to the roster.

While GBA2 was made to promote G Gundam, the roster is a real who's who of all the Gundam series' you were watching on Toonami and Adult Swim. So you would get characters from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Wing, War in the Pocket (my favorite Gundam series for the zero of you asking), among others. I mostly bring this up because Anavel Gato is a playable character, which might be the only time Gundam 0083 has ever been remembered in any capacity other than someone bringing up how sweet its opening is.

I mention all of this because, on paper, this game sounds like a cynical cash-in hammered out by tired developers who just wanted to go home. However, this is actually a pretty solid little fighting game. I wouldn't call it a great fighting game, or even the best Gundam fighting game (that honor goes to Endless Duel on the Super Famicom), but it defies the circumstances that would otherwise condemn it to the pits of mediocrity. There are some things that bother me, like my brain not being able to grasp that the game with giant robots has somewhat sluggish movement, as if you're controlling a giant robot. GBA2 also lacks any blockstrings. You go in with a light jab that gets blocked, you cannot follow up with any other move; you simply get pushed back and reset to neutral. That's a weird thing for me, playing a fighting game with no blockstring. Otherwise it's a solid game with a nice roster that kind of makes up for a real lack of modes other than story, arcade, and versus. No training mode is a bummer.

Getting back to my opening paragraph. Gundam Battle Assault 2 is a good game. But what make it stick in my brain so much is how much of a time capsule it is for the late 90s-early 2000s anime boom. This was a game made for an audience during a time when Optimus Prime and a sick hip-hop beat let you know about new episodes of Card Captor Sakura. A time when anime was hitting the mainstream outside of Japan, without having to be rebranded and filed down until there was nothing Asian in it like so much animation in the decades prior. Anime was finally Anime. While there was still censorship for things like graphic violence and anything remotely homosexual, network restrictions eased up a little bit more, showing us a whole new world of animation that had a plot that was more than "buy more toys" (paranthetical aside to acknowledge that anime was also a vehicle to sell toys and model kits, but you would be a damn fool to compare Mobile Suit Gundam to the Mattel and Mars Bar Quick Energy Chocobot Hour bullshit we were dealing with before).

Gundam Battle Assault 2 is a game that asks: do you remember having your fucking mind blown every weekday afternoon by Gundam Wing and The Big O? Do you remember how your life would be enriched every Saturday night with a new episode of Cowboy Bebop? Remember all those anime theme songs you downloaded off of Kazaa and played on Winamp, wrapped in a barely comprehensible Ruroni Kenshin skin? Remember when you could still like Ruroni Kenshin? Remember posting on anime forums, reading anime fansites, and quietly taking part in anime roleplaying chat? Remember when you joined an anime club at the age of sixteen because the owner of an anime store just so happened to be standing next to you in line at a tech shop getting your computer fixed up, and he saw your desktop wallpaper was Vash The Stampede? Remember watching the latest fansubs of Haibane Renmei and Gundam Seed in that anime club? Remember when Char Aznable was a skilled Zaku pilot, and not an obnoxious Twitter Check Mark that constantly platforms alt-right hatemongers?

This is a game where you had to have experienced that early anime boom to fully appreciate it. You had to have been enough of a freak to buy a 2002 Playstation game, ignoring literally every other game released that year, and throw it into your PS2 after you and the boys just finished watching Domon and the Shining Gundam kick someone's ass. A niche game for a sub-culture that was very quickly becoming The Culture.

Every so often, a game comes out that ends up defining something. Defines the year it came out. Defines its entire hardware generation. Defines an entire console. Or in the case of Final Fantasy Tactics, defines a genre. A title that will forever be used as the measuring stick for which all subsequent games will be compared to. Any and all strategy RPGs in the years since must face the same trial: is it as good as Final Fantasy Tactics? A genuine, bonafide instant classic in its own time, whose legacy and renown have only grown in the decades since. Tactics, despite being a spin-off, is arguably the best game in the Final Fantasy series, which is saying something, as I believe a wise man once said that it's easier to lead a camel through the eye of a needle than it is to find a bad Final Fantasy game.

Tactics is a great game. It is also a very dangerous one. RPGs keep my attention through two things: their plot, and numbers going up. You watch those numbers go up enough, and there's a reward for it. Maybe you become stronger. Maybe you learn a new ability. Maybe you can use new weapons. Maybe your Pokemon will turn into another Pokemon. There is always something. FFT makes numbers addicting. FFT is the final evolution of the Job system that began in FFIII, and was thought to have been perfected in FFV. Pick a job, learn its skills, then switch to a different job while still being able to use the abilities of the previous one. More numbers means more skills. More numbers means jobs level up. Jobs leveling up means you get more jobs to select.

You can have fighters that cast healing magic, but they can also learn the ninjas' ability to dual-wield, leading to magic using tanks that can hit twice with powerful weapons. Or learn the knights' abilities of breaking enemy equipment, and give it to a chemist, a class that can equip a gun, and now you can leave enemies without the added defense their armor gives them as your frontline moves in to do attacks that will hit harder with all that protection gone, with the Dragoon's ability to ignore the height of level terrain to snipe from the tallest point of the map. Or an Oracle that can deal damage up close with a Bo Staff, with the added ability to use mathematical formulas in order to cast devastating magic with no cost, while being able to counter enemy attacks with other magic spells, even ones you haven't learned yet. The amount of combinations that can break the game and turn your ragtag group of mercenaries into killers is what will take up all of your time. If you're like me, you will double or even triple the length of the game because of all the fucking numbers. And this is just the original Playstation game, I haven't even gotten into the PSP port, with extra jobs to unlock and new characters to use them with.

You spend 30 or more hours of your life, watching your little units become weapons of mass destruction. You search every map for hidden items, stealing rare gear from high level enemies, becoming stronger and stronger.

And none of it fucking matters.

Final Fantasy Tactics is a game about a young man named Ramza who very quickly learns what massive privilege he has, and the horrific cost his family charges others in order to keep it. Ramza will eventually draw swords against his own brothers if it means that the downtrodden will have a better life. His sense of justice will cost him his closest friends. He'll be branded a heretic by the church. He will become a fugitive and a pariah in order to expose the massive corruption at the top of society. This is a journey of Ramza doing what he believes is right, to doing what he knows is right. He does all he can, while the government and the church conspire and kill one another in their quest for power. Ramza will slay ancient demons collaborating with this leadership. He will risk life and limb and reputation, throwing away a comfortable life in the name of equality.

It will not matter.

While Ramza destroys the resurrected god behind all this bull shit, the game does not have the cliched ending where everything is fine. No, Ramza defeated an eldritch horror beyond comprehesion, but he could not slay the true evil: that which lies in the heart of man. The government is still corrupt, and they still need to keep a lid on everything that's happened. Ramza is still a wanted fugitive that has disgraced God. He and his sister Alma are forced to flee their home country and go into hiding, truly leaving behind everything they've ever known. The one man that plans to tell the truth about the events of this game is arrested and executed by the state, because Ramza's name and actions are an inconvenience; nobody can know that their country is riddled with corruption and prone to demonic influence. It will only be generations later that Ramza's story can be properly told.

All the work, the fighting, the suffering, the enduring, all for nothing. You don't matter anymore. You don't even exist. Your contributions to the world intentionally kept a secret. We've all heard about people that we were meant to never know. Rebels and activists moved to the fringes of history for a more sanitized history to be told. They might be people in your family tree. Might even be the bitter old person down the street. It sucks. So fucking frustrating to know that people in this world will not get the credit they deserve for a long time, if ever. You wanted to change the world for the better, and this is what you get: hated in your own time, and forgotten about afterwards.

I don't say that Final Fantasy Tactics is meaningless as an insult. I appreciate this ending. There's no big party afterwards where everyone is happy. A war took place, with thousands upon thousands of casualties, and the world needs something to blame, so it picked the man who survived. It's ugly, it makes no sense. Why does someone who did everything right still lose in the end? We, as a species, don't have an answer for this. Even in a realm of Sword and Sorcery, there is still no answer for this. That answer is for us to eventually figure out.

The Dreamcast, Sega's final plea for world peace, was home to the greatest arcade ports of all time: Marvel vs Capcom 2, Ikaruga, Cosmic Smash, Soul Calibur, and many other games that remind me we're in hell and games will never be this good again. But of course, there's the Big One, the game that everyone remembers, even people with only the slightest familiarity with the Dreamcast, even a Vice Presidential hopeful, that game being Crazy Taxi.

Crazy Taxi is a game that I enjoy tremendously. It is also a game that I should be annoyed by, and should not want in my collection. You're a taxi driver who needs to take passengers where they need to go. But because your taxi is Crazy, you get extra fare money for driving recklessly, weaving around oncoming traffic and doing sweet jumps. The whole time, there's a clock ticking down, and the ends when it hits zero. Now, you can add time to the clock by picking up passengers and getting to destinations quickly, but it's never enough, and your time will end. It's what makes Crazy Taxi so fun and addicting. This is a perfectly-paced arcade game designed to be played in short bursts, getting as many points as you can before time runs out, like a PC-Engine caravan shooter without the shooting. Crazy Taxi gives you that "One More Game" urge, because you have to have a better run than your last one before you go to bed, and bedtime was two hours ago. The Dreamcast port adds a new map to drive around in, and some extra mini-games where you do stunts, but it is still ultimately this exciting little experience you'll want to throw in when you're in the mood for a game, but don't feel like putting in the commitment for Shenmue.

The thing about Crazy Taxi, the thing that should make me hate it, is that it is loaded with two things: obnoxious product placement, and music that I do not care for, to put it mildly. Let me start with the music, because I need to talk about this game's soundtrack. It contains four songs from two bands, Bad Religion and The Offspring. I'm pretty ambivalent about Bad Religion. I don't feel strongly about them one way or another. But The Offspring? Oh my fucking god, there are two situations where I will ever willingly listen to The Offspring:

When I'm playing Crazy Taxi.

If I have a loaded gun pointed to my head.

I hate The Offspring. What a fucking terrible band! The year before Crazy Taxi came out, these motherfuckers committed an audio war crime with the release of their album Americana, inflicting us all with an all-timer contender for worst song ever made, "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)." For what felt like an eternity, you could not escape from that fucking song. It was everywhere: MTV, the radio, you name it. It was even used as a bumper for the ad breaks on Channel 1, the news network we had to watch when we were in school. And when enough time had passed, and you thought you were safe from uno dos tres quatro cinco cinco seis, here comes "Weird" Al Yankovich with his new parody album, which includes the song, "Pretty Fly (For A Rabbi)," and HERE WE GO AGAIN.

There's a little more to Crazy Taxi than flying around the streets to the sounds of an ill-fitting Offspring song about generational abuse that, much like how my cab veers in and out of busy traffic, veers in and out of victim-blaming single mothers. Crazy Taxi has a ton of flagrant, obnoxious product placement. You pick up a fare: "take me to Kentucky Fried Chicken!" "Take me to Tower Records!" "Take me to The Original Levi's®️ Store!" Real human beings went into a recording booth and were paid money to say, "Take me to The Original Levi's®️ Store!" The kind of eye-rolling cringe that's like an unironic Mattel and Mars Bar Quick Energy Chocobot Hour. Unlike the Chocobots, I cannot put down this entertaining Sega product, despite my dislike of being advertised to. You can argue that this was done to make the city you drive around in more "real," except that there's nothing particularly real about Crazy Taxi; this isn't exactly a Yakuza game, which is set in a real city with real businesses.

Over the years, Crazy Taxi has been re-released. Versions without the advertisements and a new soundtrack. Fundamentally, it's the same game. Yet, it is always a lesser experience than the original. Why is it that I need to play the version of Crazy Taxi with the senseless ads and music that I hate? A part of me worries that I'm afflicted by a horrible condition that has plagued society for far too long: Irony. Sega games of this era were such genuine, well-meaning creations, and I would feel guilty if I could only enjoy one of these games because it was lame. I've been wracking my brain for longer than I'd like to admit, trying to figure out exactly why I only care about the version of Crazy Taxi with the ads and the music I hate.

But maybe it isn't irony? Crazy Taxi is an incredibly fun game, with a personality reminiscent of an awkward pre-adolescent. You know, listening to music on the radio, which means that it must be good because it's on the radio, even though it isn't actually any good. Focusing on brand names as a way of forging your own identity; maybe you'll become popular if you show up to school wearing a hot new pair of Original Levi's®️. You haven't quite found yourself yet. You're not quite the moody Mall Goth that listens to music your parents hate. You haven't replaced your closet with an all-black wardrobe. You're finding your place in the world. Crazy Taxi feels like the digital equivalent of that, and maybe that's why it has managed to stick with me and so many others in a way that goes beyond, "here is a fun game where you drive fast."

The year 2000. A pretty wild time for games, looking back. A year full of changes, with a new generation emerging, while the previous one was still going strong. The Playstation 2 had come out, while the original Playstation showed no signs of slowing down. Sega still believed in the Dreamcast. The Nintendo 64 would have an incredibly strong final year, before passing the torch to the Gamecube. The Game Boy had a new lease on life thanks to the runaway success of Pokemon, and the upcoming release of Gold and Silver would do real well for the Game Boy Color. Arcades hadn't died yet. The Wonderswan was doing alright, if you were an importer. The Neo Geo Pocket would grace us with its all too short lifespan. Hell, even the Saturn got one final official release that year (Final Fight Revenge)! Some of the absolute best games ever made, spread out across every console, handheld, and PC, all in one year.

With such a massive avalanche of quality, so, so many great games found themselves unfortunately lost in the shuffle. A lot of titles that didn't really get their due at the time, only being appreciated long after their release. I would like to talk about one of those games.

In this great year for games and little else, Polygon Magic released the one-on-one fighting game, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters. Polygon Magic might not be a name that you immediately recognize, but you've probably played/suffered through their work. They had previously released the comedy mini-game compilation Incredible Crisis, as well as...Galerians. I have many, many, many thoughts about Galerians, but that will have to wait for another, much more negative, time. They had also released two fighting games previously: Fighter's Impact, which was a creative, experimental fighter that was ultimately plagued by awkward inputs and incredibly cheap CPU. Then Polygon Magic would reskin Fighter's Impact for a western release under the name Vs. Vs also had a number of mechanical changes that took flawed yet unique Fighter's Impact and turned it into what might be the worst fucking fighting game I have ever played. A truly wreteched experience I had with Vs.

The first thing you probably noticed about Slap Happy Rhythm Busters is how cool it looks. The cel-shaded graphics look amazing, and fit real well with a cast of characters who all have unique, sometimes exaggerated porportions. Fighting in front of colorful cityscapes full of buildings covered in neon signage that curve and bend like a cartoon, or candy-colored corner stores that look like they would be the hangout of teenagers you would see in an issue of FRUiTS or Popeye magazine, all while listening to some hard hitting EDM. This is a game that does a great job of nailing that turn-of-the-millenium Shibuya style that other games like Space Channel 5, Mr. Driller, and the big one, Jet Set Radio were all great examples of, and unfortunately hasn't really been seen since outside of The World Ends With You. It's a shame, because it's a very cool look that blended the past and the hypothetical future that spreads a message of hope and equality. Then again, it's not 2000 anymore, and the world became a much different and stupider place since, so maybe that style can never come back. At least it can't come back the same way.

The other big thing about Slap Happy Rhythm Busters is that the game is really fucking good. The kind of good that I'm surprised doesn't have a side tournament at EVO. I was interested in playing the game solely due to how it looked, but seeing how technical it is made me stick around. SHRB liberally borrows from other fighters: its standard for combos comes from Darkstalkers' "Magic Series," or Guilty Gear's "Gatlings." One particular character, Euri, even replicates the air dashing made famous by Morrigan. There's wall bounces. There's juggles. There's dash cancels. There's short hops. There's fucking short hops! Short hops more or less only exist in SNK games! There are all these pre-existing mechanics that are used really well, and aren't haphazard like they probably would be in a different game.

But it's not all blatant lifting, as SHRB has two very unique things that separate it from other fighters. One, in lieu of a gauge for guard breaking or getting stunned, the meter under your health is for something new: once you fill up your opponents' meter, they'll begin to flash for a few seconds. During this flash, the next hit they receive will be completely unblockable, allowing for all sorts of fun combos. However, this is not a free hit, as they can still move and attack the whole time.

The other, much bigger mechanic added is that every character has a level 3 super that turns the game into a rhythm game. Just match button presses to the on-screen notes to do more damage, and if you do enough damage, you get a fun little cutscene at the end. The opponent can also mash buttons to add extra notes to throw you off your timing to try and mitigate damage, as well.

I love that this is a fighting game that has no problem wearing its influences on its sleeve, putting its own spin on all of them, and having a real heart and soul that makes the game timeless. A digital celebration of the fighting game genre, and also a celebration of youth culture. That perfect storm of style and substance that is doomed to obscurity due to a regional-only release at a time when seemingly every game company on Earth was firing on all cylinders. Luckily, the torch of "small, but inspired fighting games with a unique look" continues to be carried by games like Melty Blood and Ultra Fight Da! Kyanta 2.

Yeah, hey, I've been gone for a whole month again. I'll just tell you straight up: I had a fucking shit time in June, and I'm honestly still pretty mad about it midway through July. Other than attending Fyter Fest, last month sucked! I had to go to a terrible funeral where everyone was drunk or on one of the drugs that aren't fun to take where I was nearly killed multiple times because everyone on Earth has suddenly forgotten how to drive a car without murderous intent. I'm struggling to deal with the abstract nature of being someone with Autism and Pronouns In Bio living in a world that is increasingly hostile towards those things. Watching the world I grew up in die and get replaced by a cynical free market of 24 hour advertising and "hustle culture" where political values and the voices of the marginalized are as commodified as a box of Ritz crackers. Sick of a society of detached irony, where genuine emotion might as well be punishable by death.

Anyways, I've been making the mistake of internalizing my feelings, and it's led to me not wanting to do things. Sure, I could keep making negative posts where I vent and talk shit about people and complain about a YouTube channel I realized I was hate-watching after a couple of videos. Or, I could try and maintain a positive image for my site that instead goes inactive because I don't feel positive because I'm too busy feeling nihilistic in a dark room while I play Pokemon or some horny game that was originally on the PS Vita that only sold 100 copies.

All of this has led to me being even more anti-social than normal, with the moments I actually do talk to people taking more out of me than it should, and I'm starting to get tired of feeling that way. Also tired of feeling like I'm using my feelings as an excuse to get out of my own self-imposed responsibilities, like writing a new article every week, and finally working on a new game. I need to work on something as a way to work through how I'm feeling, but my autist brain is instead putting its metaphorical hand in front of me and doing that thing where your skills immediately degrade to such a degree you wonder how you were able to do any of this stuff in the first place. So right now, I'm stuck fighting off this "everything sucks and will never get better and nobody cares about you anyway" anchor tied around my ankles. Let me tell you: it is a real struggle! It is an incredibly frustrating thing to sit down and try to animate a sprite, feel like you've never done it at any point in your life despite doing it for years, and then the canvas remains blank an hour later. Even more frustrating when you feel like you're letting so many people down by looking like a lazy bum.

I did eventually get something:

I just wanted to let everyone know where I was at. Still feeling miserable and still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. At least I have a lot of Pokemon to show for it, In fact, here are some that I caught in Emerald and Fire Red that I imported into Pokemon Colosseum for the Gamecube.

I've been struggling for a little while, trying to figure out the best way to open this piece. It finally hit me: there is a real lack of authenticity these days. Everything has to be buried under several layers of detached irony, punctuated by a wink and a nod. The concept of genuine belief and emotion are more taboo than incest. The internet is now a nazi-run panopticon where sincerity is cringe, bro.

This also extends to the concept of fandom. As part of a project that I'm connected to in the loosest sense of the term, I stumbled across an old web site that played host to multiple shrines dedicated to RPGs that the webmaster liked. Every single one had a different layout, original artwork, dedicated fanfiction, the works. Hell, there was even a shrine for Vay, the most middle of the road Sega CD RPG. A Japanese mook once said that it contained "no positive or negative qualities," and that doesn't matter, because a dedicated fan made a whole web site to show how much they loved that fucking game.

That's the thing: fandom wasn't always called "fandom." It used to be called "liking things," and hyperactive teenagers and bored college students used to like things so much that they would teach themselves HTML and even CSS to show it. I used to spend many weekends as a shut-in teen enjoying other people sharing their interests (I did also make my own fansites, for the record, though they are long dead). I remembered enjoying the fanfiction, the fanart, and updates broken up with ^_^ faces.

The thing about sites like these, is how many of them were people having fun with their favorite things. A fanfic where the cast of Final Fantasy Tactics takes a paternity test on the Maury Povich show? Sure, why not? Amateurish fanart of Team Rocket getting drafted to the Seattle Mariners? Great! It didn't matter whether any of these things were good, or if the jokes flew over the head of anyone that wasn't in the author's fourth period English class, there was dedication, honesty, and sincerity behind it that I find myself missing more and more as time goes on. Hashtags and wikis are a poor substitute for learning a skill just so you can make a page about Gary Oak having a large penis. The most you can hope for is striking gold on Neocities, or finding a long abandoned fansite on Angelfire or Tripod.

I bring all of this up as a way to introduce Return of the Dark Sorcerer. RotDS is a ROM hack of Final Fantasy VI. A dedicated team of programmers, sprite artists, writers, and even musicians got together to take a genuine masterpiece of a game, and turned it into a story where the author's OC's hang out with various media properties. Before I go any further, I just need to take a minute to give credit to the team for actually finishing this. This is not some backhanded comment; making a game is hard! Even making a ROM hack is difficult. Hacking an RPG from beginning to end is such a monumental task, let alone hacking a game that is massive in scope like Final Fantasy VI. Not just the dialogue, but the sprites, enemies, music, characters, magic, skills, Espers, bosses, parts of the map even. That nobody killed each other during the development of this hack is a miracle.

Anyways, back to the main crux of the game. Being a ROM hack, it still follows the same story beats that FF6 does, but with more jokes, references, and Original Characters. Cloud and Tifa from FF7 are members of your party. Professor Oak, as in the guy from Pokemon, is the inventor of Magitek armor and turning Espers into Magicite. Mr. Meeseecks from Rick and Morty explains how save points work. Sans from Undertale is on board the Ghost Train. The tutorial school in Narshe has been replaced with the ROM hack team hanging out while a chiptune rendition of "Forgot About Dre" plays.

Return of the Dark Sorcerer is the logical endpoint for goofy fanfics and webcomics with Mega Man sprites. The playable equivalent of stumbling across cloud_strife38's home on the internet after a Saturday evening of scrolling through the Anime Web Turnpike. Me being the broken record that I am, I will remind you that the internet of today is a bloated, fascistic shell of its former self. The kind of fun on the web that I mentioned earlier doesn't really exist in this day and age. Publishing a two-chapter story where Rufus Shinra joins the NWO Wolfpac runs the risk of you having more YouTube videos dedicated to analyzing every aspect of your personal life than there are episodes of M.A.S.H. So to see a game like this coming out as recently as it has (in fact, its most recent update was four months ago) warms my cold heart and melts my embittered facade just a little bit.

Now, I haven't talked about the game itself much. I mean, it's Final Fantasy VI, do I really need to? All-time masterpiece. The closest we have to a "perfect" game, if such a thing even exists. That being said, this hack does fuck with the numbers a bit, which I need to complain about. Enemies, bosses especially, have more health. Status effects are a constant source of pain, and you better hope you entered a new area with at least a dozen of every curative item. Battles give you little experience, sometimes none at all, with grinding being done for money and the eventual Esper raising. Speaking as someone who had to completely start the game over because I made the mistake of playing Final Fantasy VI like it was Final Fantasy VI, let me make this clear: do NOT play this like it's Final Fantasy VI. The replacement for Terra is your front-line attacker, instead of a magic powerhouse that melts large monsters in 2-3 turns. The replacement for Edgar is a back-line support that uses his attack-all tools for minor damage. Lots of little differences in each character that will absolutely fuck you if you try to play them like the original game. Almost gave this a negative review because my first attempt at this game took me a fucking hour to defend the Narshe Esper from Kefka's forces. But then my second attempt took me minutes, so I can go back to liking this because it reminds me of the old internet.

yeah baby we got deep cut simpsons references too

Even with my misgivings with the battle system changes, that's still part of the amateur fan's spirit. Even if some of the jokes and references are cringy, I don't fucking care. Playing this has been something of a healing experience that I've been in dire need of these last few years. It lets me know that the spirit of fun and creativity for the sake of it is not dead. Gives me hope that more people might undertake similar projects in the future. Or at least, put together a little HTML-written page that contains a short story where Quistis Trepe and Shingo Yabuki are a Miami Vice style detective duo.

This is actually the first live wrestling show I've attended since 2001, which was a taping of WWF Smackdown. I recently rewatched that show and, surprise, it was fucking dogshit! Watching it again with the added hindsight of knowing that WCW and ECW had both shut down a month before reminded me just how deep in the fucking trenches we were. 2001 was an awful year for many reasons, really.

Anyways, AEW did not put on a terrible show. In fact, they put on a great one! I got to see most of my favorites: Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, Speedball Mike Bailey, Kazuchika Okada, Toni Storm. I didn't get to see Swerve Strickland or Samoa Joe, but you don't always get everything you want in life. But I will say right now that it was pretty fucked up that I was forced to see both Sammy Guevara and Adam Cole within the same hour. There is no excuse for that bullshit.

Oh, and I was right next to Powerhouse Hobbs when he came out to answer Max Caster's Five Minute White Boy Challenge. You can see me snap this picture and then give a big thumbs up on TV.

It looks like I was super far away from the action. This is merely a trick played by a terrible iPhone camera. I got a great view of the action, and I can be seen on the hard cam quite a bit! In fact, THERE I AM, GARY!

The only things I couldn't see was any action by the near guard rail, by the commentary desk. So a lot of outside brawling that night was pretty obscured. Also, a lot of entrances were blocked because of the camera crew getting close up shots for TV.

The Mission Ballroom, as it turns out, is a sweet venue. Real good crowd too; didn't have to deal with obnoxious drunks saying fucked up shit about any of the minority wrestlers. Also: didn't see one fucking Jim Cornette sign, thank fuck. I figured I would be in good company when, during a pre-show video where Excalibur narrates disclaimers and codes of conduct, there was a huge roar of approval when he said that anyone who made bigoted comments would be ejected. Big pops when Komander and Hechicero spoke Spanish (Colorado has a huge Latino population). Toni Storm dancing with Mina Shirakawa got a reaction almost as loud as Omega having a face-off with Okada later in the night.

Of course, I brought my mother with me, because she has become a huge AEW fan over the last year, and she had a great time, too. The lighting wasn't too harsh on her eyesight (though the red lighting for the ROH taping sucked for the both of us), and the seating didn't hurt her back, though she was smart enough to bring her walking cane that she never uses to play the sympathy role and try to get us better seats.

Anyways, this show kicked fucking ass, and I'm just going to end this with a bunch of pictures I took:
